On Tuesday, 9th September 2025, the Solar Industry Association of Zambia (SIAZ) hosted a Member Consultative Meeting on E-Waste: A Growing Threat in Zambiaâs Solar Sector at Crossroads Lodge in Lusaka. The meeting was held in a hybrid format, with both physical and online participation, allowing members across the country to contribute to this important discussion.
Electronic waste is emerging as one of the most pressing challenges facing Zambiaâs solar industry. Poor-quality solar products and unqualified installations are already adding to the problem, raising environmental concerns and threatening the long-term sustainability of the sector.
The meeting featured a presentation by Mr. Leszek Kasprowicz, author of the Baseline Report and Technical Guidelines for Waste Energy Equipment (WEEREE), 2024, funded by the European Union. His insights provided members with valuable guidance on the environmental, business, and community impacts of e-waste, as well as possible strategies for addressing the issue.
Key highlights of the meeting included:
- Linking poor-quality products and poor installations to the rise of solar-related e-waste.
- Member discussions on advocacy strategies and industry interventions.
- Agreement on steps towards forming an E-Waste Working Group to guide policy and promote sustainable practices in the sector.
SIAZ thanks all members who joined both in person and online for their valuable input. Member contributions are central to shaping advocacy priorities and ensuring that the solar industry in Zambia continues to grow in a way that is clean, credible, and sustainable.
